Formula Explained

This calculator uses a straightforward proportion: if a food contains F grams of fat per 100 grams, then a portion of W grams contains W / 100 × F grams of fat. When you enter ounces, the tool first converts to grams (1 oz = 28.35 g), then applies the same proportion.

Total fat → calories: multiply fat grams by 9, because each gram of fat provides about 9 kilocalories. The daily-value percentage is based on the FDA reference value of 78 g of total fat for a 2,000-calorie diet.

This method is most reliable when the food is weighed in the same state described in the nutrition data — cooked beans should be weighed after cooking, and seeds or nuts weighed raw, because water changes the fat density.
