How It Works: The MET Formula

This calculator uses the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) method, the same approach used in exercise physiology. One MET is the energy your body uses while sitting quietly — roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. The formula is:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

The 3.5 represents an average resting oxygen consumption in milliliters per kilogram per minute, and 200 converts that oxygen cost into calories. Because bed activities involve very little movement, their MET values are low: sleeping is about 0.95, lying awake is 1.0, and reading in bed is about 1.3. Even at these low intensities, your body burns a meaningful number of calories over several hours — your heart, lungs, brain, and digestive system never switch off.

Once total calories are known, the calculator applies your chosen fuel mix. At rest, the body typically draws 60–70% of its energy from fat.
