The Formula Explained

BMI was introduced in the 1830s by the Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet, which is why the official name is the Quetelet index. The metric version of the formula is:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Because many everyday measurements in the US and UK are imperial, the same index is usually rewritten as:

BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²

The height is squared because the index was designed to be approximately independent of overall height in adults: weight scales faster than height, and squaring height removes most of that correlation. The constant 703 is simply the unit conversion factor between lb/in² and kg/m².

The tool also reports BMI Prime, the ratio BMI ÷ 25. Since 25 is the conventional upper boundary of the healthy band, a BMI Prime of 1.00 means you are exactly at that boundary. Values above 1.00 scale proportionally: 1.20 corresponds to a BMI of 30, 1.40 to a BMI of 35. This makes it easy to see at a glance how far a man sits from the healthy range.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — metric. A man weighs 82 kg and is 1.80 m tall. Height squared is 1.80 × 1.80 = 3.24 m², so BMI = 82 ÷ 3.24 = 25.3. That lands just above the healthy band and falls into the overweight category. Losing only 2 kg (about 4.4 lb) would bring the value to 24.7 and inside the healthy range — a useful reminder that boundary cases respond to small changes.

Example 2 — imperial. A man is 5 ft 10 in (70 inches) tall and weighs 165 lb. BMI = 703 × 165 ÷ (70 × 70) = 115,995 ÷ 4,900 = 23.7. That is a normal reading, close to the middle of the healthy band.

An important refinement: several Asian health authorities (including Japan, China, and India) use lower cutoffs, treating 23.0–27.4 as overweight and 27.5 and above as obese, because the same BMI tends to carry higher metabolic risk in those populations. Tips, Limitations & Common Mistakes

Weigh yourself in the morning, after emptying your bladder and before breakfast, for the most reproducible number. Measure height without shoes, standing straight against a wall.
BMI does not measure body fat directly. A muscular man at 12% body fat can easily score 28–30 BMI and be classified overweight; conversely, a man with low muscle mass can have a normal BMI yet carry excess fat — a pattern sometimes called normal-weight obesity.

The most informative companion measurement is waist circumference: for men, a waist above 102 cm (40 in) signals substantially elevated cardiometabolic risk regardless of BMI. If you are a serious athlete, prefer body-fat assessments such as skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance, or DEXA scans. Common entry mistakes include selecting imperial but typing centimeters into the feet box, or entering shoes-on height.
